2013 Bike Arlington Freezing Saddles

April 08, 2013

Bike Arlington is one of the local bicycle advocacy groups here in the northern Virginia area. The link to their forums is over in the blog roll. One of the long time members suggested and then created a challege for the forums to motivate folks to continue to commute by bike over the winter. He called it "Freezing Saddles", an homage to Blazing Saddles. The contest ran from Jan 1 to Mar 20th (the first day of Spring), and I joined up, not expecting to do much, but it would be a fun way to get to know some of the people on the forums. Over the 79 days, we rode over 73k miles, with some people riding over 2000 miles! Me? I got 447 miles over that time, riddled with sickness and all. On the 21st we had a Happy Hour to meet everyone and hand out prizes. DSC01527 We had a lot of fun, drank some beers and talked, and then I walked over to the Phoenix Bikes fundraiser, where I ended up bidding on (and winning) a nice present for my aunt, all in the name of supporting such a quality organization.
