Packet Pickup for the Five Boroughs Bike Tour
May 13, 2013
This year
Bike New York Five Boroughs Bike Tour required you to come to the Bike New York bike expo to pick up your packet, instead of mailing it out. I'm guessing this was done to keep people from selling their slot in the race. This was a better situation than last year, where you paid a $15 fee to be in a lottery, and if you won, you got to pay for an entry into the race, if you weren't chosen, you still were out $15. Feh.
I went up to NJ and me and the family spent the night with old friends and the inlaws. So, I took NJ Transit into Penn Station, walked over to the 34th st / Herald Square subway entrance, caught the F down to East Broadway, and walked the 4 blocks down to the bike expo.
Entered in, got directions, and then turned right and fell in love.
Yes, that's the trophy for the Giro d'Italia. Complete with a real podium girl:
After drooling over the trophy, I went and picked up my packet. #9520. I was in the Blue group, so I had to be there bright and early on Sunday at 7am for a 7:45am start.
I then walked up and down the expo, looking at all the vendor stalls, picking up some swag, trying everything that was free.
Stopped and drooled over the new Bianchi road bike:
Saw the new Citi Bikes, which look amazingly like blue versions of Capital Bike Share bikes, and the same as the bikes in Ottawa's bike share:
I stopped by Danny Shane Cyclo stall and ended up buying a really smart looking plaid jersey:
After spending almost three hours wandering around, it was time to get home. Saw someone from VA on the way back to the Subway:
And caught a sight of Freedom Tower:
Also, did find the Citi bike stand near the subway. No bikes there, as they weren't officially launched:
Ermagad!
